Palm Pilot

My experience with the Palm Pilot stretches back to the original. I remember struggling with graffiti till I could actually take notes at a conversational speed. Recently I upgraded to the new Palm TX. Here is a compilation of my favorite links and information I consider essential to my Palm use.

Applications and Software

Freeware Palm

The primary FREE software web site for Palm handheld’s.  Honest freeware - very few ‘hidden’ shareware or commercial products.  If you need free software for the Palm this is your best FIRST stop.

Commercial Companies

Access Company Spin off of the Palm OS now claims to be the leader in mobile technology.  Open source tools for developing against Palm freely available.
Palm The primary site for Palm Products.

Development

ACCESS Dev Network Complete development environment for Palm and the Garnet OS as well as the future ALP (Access Linux Platform).

Development Tools

How to develop palm applications from Linux. Older pilots not ARM.

prc-tools on Source forge

Source forge home page on the prc-tools chain. It hasn’t been updated in several years (so the page is dated 2003).

Forums and Information

One Source 1src.com is a top notch first rate forum for getting updates and information about handheld’s and the mobile computing community.
Bright Hand My other set of forums I browse to get the latest happenings and support in the handheld/smart phone community.
PDA Street Many sub forums about specific Palm hardware.  Helpful community of subscribers.
Palm Info Center

More specific to Palm, active, and with a wealth of existing knowledge.

Projects with Palm

Linux on your Palm TX

How to install and run Linux on your Palm T|X.  Most major features work.  Bluetooth is working but WIFI is still not.  With WIFI this would open a whole new world to the T|X

Palm Pilot Robot Kit

Two university students developed a kit to help make the Palm Pilot the perfect center for a small robot.  Instructions and source code included.  I must do this with an older Tungsten E.

Smart Phone or PDA?
I researched whether or not to upgrade or move to a smart phone. Living abroad I found two separate devices gave me more options. I like hacks, and with the Palm resources available, that is much easier without an integrated phone.  I also enjoy the larger screen and portable keyboard which provides me a small equivalent EEEPC experience.  Its unfortunate that we may be seeing a end of life for handheld’s from Palm.
